Making a difference in the community

About Melon’s Gift

Melon’s Gift, Inc. was formed in memory of my beloved canine companion, “Melon.”  This benevolent “special need” dog touched the lives of everyone with whom she came into contact.   A true gentle giant, Melon taught us about tolerance and kindness.  The annual community fund-raising event “The Fun Dog Show” was started because of her.  Melon was an inspiration for many great things to come.  Our organization is dedicated to serving our community by raising money and awareness for the cancer cause.  We have expanded our efforts into other areas; all the while recognizing the need to “make a difference” in our community.

History

I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 35 years old. It was not only a jolt to me, but a shock to everyone who knew me. I was young, healthy and at the pinnacle of life and my career. The fear of dying was overwhelming. Initially it was almost too much to handle, but I quickly discovered inner resolve and strength. Between family and friends and an incredible community, I turned a scary situation into one of hope and faith.  Breast cancer found me again, but I continue to maintain a positive outlook. As long as I am here, I will continue to find purpose in my life.  Having a sense of humor certainly helps the journey.

As my 50th birthday was approaching, I wanted a new challenge.  I signed on to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day walk.  For this I needed to not only train to walk a daunting 60 miles in 3 days, but I needed to raise an enormous amount of money to do so!  Thus, the origin of our first “Fun Dog Show”.  Our event took place in a local park and we hosted close to 40 dogs.  I raised the money to register for the walk, but more importantly I recognized the love and support of my community.  The following year I walked again, but now I had a team.  The Fun Dog Show raised enough money to pay for my team members and we outgrew the park.  To my surprise and joy, our little personal fund raising event exploded into an annual community event.

After I lost my beloved Melon, I incorporated my non-profit organization in her memory.  It has been beautiful to focus our efforts in other worthy directions, most notably the “Howard Canfield Cancer Fund for Men”.  Our Fun Dog Show now supports the very fund we spearheaded in response to a need in our community.  It is our pleasure and honor to continue to give back.

Our small and mighty organization is staffed by a group of extremely dedicated volunteers.  From our Board of Directors to our committee members to all of the amazing individuals who help at events, we are truly admired for our cohesiveness and determination.  I feel blessed to call all of these incredible people “friends”.  We hold the same ideals and goals, and work together for the common goal of “making a difference”.

It is because of the support and love around me that I am here.  I will continue my crusade to make a difference for as long as I am able.
